Frontier Agriculture officially launched its new, free MySOYL app at this year’s LAMMA show, designed to give farmers and land managers access to field and crop data while on-the-go.
Developed by the company’s digital teams and its precision farming division, SOYL, the app seamlessly syncs to the MySOYL desktop which is available in Frontier’s MyFarm platform.
The app’s functions include the ability to access biomass imagery and map layers while physically in the field, while GPS and scouting technology allows real-time crop walking observations, points of interest, measurements and photos to be logged.
Greater access and more control
Frontier’s head of customer digital solutions, Tom Parker, believes the app is an important tool for farmers in light of changing farm policy. He hopes its many functions will give growers greater access to their farm data in a practical, easy way.
“Many farmers and land managers are already doing a great job of capturing crop production and performance insights,” explains Tom, “but the difficulty is often knowing what to do with all the information in order to get value from it.
“Our hope is that the app takes a lot of this burden away. Farmers and land managers are experts at what they do and glean a lot of vital insights when they are in the field. With the app, they can now record the real-time observations they see every day, all of which are immediately combined with the wider farm insights stored in the MySOYL and MyFarm desktop.”
Following last year’s introduction of an environmental mapping tool to the MySOYL desktop application, Tom stresses that the ability to record real-time environmental information via the mobile app was just as important.
“The industry has had more environmental responsibility placed on it than ever before in a bid to move towards more sustainable practices. Many agri-environment schemes require farmers and land managers to provide evidence of the work they are doing so they can secure funding.
“The environmental mapping layer we added in the MySOYL desktop was designed to support growers with this, combining their agri-environment projects with their wider crop production activities so they can see and manage everything in one place.
“It was important to reflect these functions in the new app. Farmers can log observations such as disease, lodging or weed problems in their commercial crops and just as easily upload photographs to show the locations of farmland bird feeders or evidence of Countryside Stewardship options being drilled.”
As well as real-time information, the app puts the performance and observations of previous seasons right at the users’ fingertips too. “You can stand in a field and tab through the various nutrient and soil type map layers for the season to monitor changes,” says Tom, “but you also have the option to look back at the years before. It’s invaluable for benchmarking performance or understanding the impact certain inputs, management methods or rotations are having – all of which can help to shape decisions for the year ahead.”
