The catalogue, produced collaboratively by Kings Crops, Frontier Agriculture and SOYL, is a grower’s essential resource for environmental land management and sustainable crop production. It contains the latest specialist crop mixtures and technical advice from experts across the Frontier group.

With expert advice on stewardship and sustainability, a comprehensive range of specialist seed mixes and grower case studies, the 2022 Environmental Land Management and Specialist Crops Catalogue contains all a grower needs to be option-ready for Stewardship agreements and more.

Farming is changing

Kings Sales Manager, Richard Barnes, believes that there are opportunities ahead for growers who are looking to improve their sustainable practice.

“There have never been more avenues available to growers who want to engage in environmental land management,” says Richard. “The reduction in BPS is a move towards a more ambitious approach to sustainability. Growers will be rewarded for their efforts to protect land, increase biodiversity and implement more sustainable farming practice.

“However, with change comes challenges. There will be new standards and new requirements that must be met, which means changing the way we farm. The catalogue, and advice from our team, can help growers navigate those changes and get the most from the schemes available to them.”

The catalogue contains a wide range of products suitable for use within Countryside Stewardship options, as well as mixes that support environmental land management and sustainability initiatives.

Using digital solutions to record and demonstrate environmental improvement

Frontier also offers a number of digital solutions that can complement and enhance specialist crop planning and environmental land management activity and these are detailed in the catalogue.

“The online tools we have available to us today make it so much easier to achieve your farm objectives and to provide evidence of your activity,” says Frontier’s head of customer digital solutions, Tom Parker. “When entering into a Countryside Stewardship scheme, you have to prove you’ve met the scheme requirements. Without the right tools, this can be hard.

“For growers engaged in a Stewardship scheme, we recommend using our environmental mapping tool. Within the tool, users can view their crop performance data and also test and explore a range of scenarios. In addition, growers can view their fields with RPA legends, plan sporting activity, build natural capital asset maps and gather scheme evidence all in one place,” says Tom. “Our online tools really form part of a larger end-to-end solution for environmental land management beyond buying option-compliant seed.”Online_tools.jpg

The environment mapping tool is one app within the MyFarm farm management platform, Frontier’s suite of digital solutions, which hosts a range of free and subscription-based apps to support grower activity.

A focus on product suitability

The catalogue has been designed to make it easy to find seed mixes that match the requirements of agri-environment projects and Countryside Stewardship (CS) agreements.

“Once you’ve decided to commit to a CS agreement, you need to consider which mixes are going to fulfil the requirements of your agreement options while working best for the unique conditions of your land,” says Richard. “For many growers, Stewardship is about more than the financial incentive; it’s about how their land can be used to benefit wildlife, improve soil health or explore ways to use ground which has previously been bare.

“When presented with a variety of seed mixes, it can be hard to know where to begin. The catalogue contains a key that indicates which products are eligible for selected Countryside Stewardship options and which are suitable for use in northern England and Scotland,” explains Richard. “Products are also listed with icons that indicate their benefits for farmland birds, cultural control, water quality, soil fertility, soil structure or forage and for their suitability as a pollinator or beneficial. They also indicate whether they are good options for cutting, overseeding of grass or grazing.

The catalogue makes it easy to make the right choice for your farm. And, of course, if you need further support or advice, our team is only a phone call away.”
