Frontier’s £5 million investment set to boost growers’ export opportunities in the south

March 2022

Frontier Agriculture has completed the purchase of grain exporting business, Southampton Grain Terminal (SGT).  Frontier has also completed a multi-million pound programme of investment to update the terminal, which is the gateway to numerous export markets for UK farmers.

Since 2004 Frontier owned 50% of SGT, with the other 50% owned by The Soufflet Group. This news means that Frontier is now the sole owner of SGT. The members of staff based at SGT have all joined the Frontier team.

Opportunity and major investment

Speaking about the news, Simon Christensen, grain trading director for Frontier said: “Full ownership of SGT is good news for our farmer customers. Access to export markets is an important element of our strategy to support farmers and having a strong network of export facilities supports that.

“We have completed a major £5 million pound refurbishment of SGT over the last year to ensure the site is fit for purpose and ready to enable us to execute export opportunities for many years to come. The investment has seen us upgrade the entire site including the intake and loading facilities, laboratories and staff areas, as well as rewiring the site. Separately we have concluded a new agreement to extend our lease on the facility by another 16 years.

“By taking ownership of SGT, investing in it and committing to a long-term lease we have secured a strong commercial footprint in the region meaning we can continue to seek the best markets for local farmers’ grain for years to come.”
